 Prostatitis: Patient Instructions

If you have a fever > 100.5 F. or 38 C. and /or cannot urinate, contact your physician urgently.

Take the antibiotics ordered by your physician.  We usually use one that gets into the prostatic fluid well, and usually for 2 to 4 weeks.  Continue at least one week after ALL the symptoms are gone

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and highly spiced, especially peppery foods, and any other foods or drinks that seem to increase your symptoms

If you do not have a fever > 100.5 F. or 38 C. an orgasm 2 to 3 times a week is helpful in draining the prostate.  DO NOT with-hold ejaculation or delay it as this may irritate the prostate further.   Two or 3 times a night is too much.

DO NOT hold onto your urine for long periods of time, especially when you gotta go.  We frequently see prostatitis after long road or airplane rides.  This is a no-no!!!

DO NOT do any lifting carrying or straining with a full bladder.  This may force urine back into the prostate tissues or ducts and cause irritation.  If you work out start with an empty bladder, and break you workout to void if the need arises.

Sitting in a hot bath or hot tub once or twice a day is helpful in relieving symptoms and stress and the extra blood flow from the heat can be a healing factor.

Decrease stress! A tight sphincter may raise voiding pressures and create irritation.

Blood in the urine or ejaculate may occur but must be reported to your urologist.

Mild, intermittent symptoms may occur for a while after treatment.  If they are persistent , further treatment may be necessary.

Prostatitis will probably, eventually recur.
