Evaluation of Kidney Stones The doctor will initially take a history and do a brief exam. A urine specimen will usually show blood either visually or microscopically. Crystals may be seen. To confirm the diagnosis some form of imaging will be needed. The IVP is still the most useful study for stones. This is a series of x-rays taken after injecting a medication which is excreted through the kidneys and shows on x-ray. This allows the physician to pinpoint the location and size of the stone, and the degree of obstruction caused by the stone. In many emergency rooms that are so equipped, a Spiral CT scan is done instead of an IVP. Other studies may include ultrasound or CT scanning. These studies allow the physician to plan treatment.
